Houston 73, Texas 72: Danuel House hit an elbow jumper with 17 seconds left to lift the host Cougars to the victory in the opening round of the CBI tournament.

Joseph Young led Houston (20-12) with 18 points. TaShawn Thomas had 15 points and 10 rebounds while House and Leon Gibson scored 11 for the Cougars, who will face George Mason in the next round.

Texas (16-18) was led by Julien Lewis with a career-high 25 points but he missed a jumper from the top of the key which would have given the Longhorns the lead in the final seconds. Texas gathered up the rebound and lost the ball before its could get off another shot.

Houston led by as much as 11 midway through the first half but Texas closed the gap to 37-31 at the break. The Longhorns scored the first seven points of the second half to take its first lead since the game's opening minutes.

Texas eventually opened up a six-point lead late in the second half before Houston went on a run to set up the dramatic finish. It was the first meeting between the two state schools since 2000.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas starting center Cameron Ridley left the game in the first half with breathing problems due to an upper-respiratory infection and did not return. ...Texas' Prince Ibeh led all rebounders with 11. ...Texas coach Rick Barnes is 130-19 against in-state schools.
