Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono led the way with 25 points and six assists as the host Wildcats held off the Thundering Herd.

James Bell added 19 points and Darrun Hilliard scored 15 for Villanova (2-0), which overcame 17 turnovers to stay perfect on the young season.

D.D. Scarver scored 22 points and Dennis Tinnon collected 15 points and nine rebounds for Marshall (1-1).

The Thundering Herd fell behind 43-35 at the break but hung within single digits for most of the second half, pulling to within 70-68 on Chris Martin’s 3-pointer with 4:02 left. Marshall went cold from there, missing its final six field goal attempts.

Bell’s 3-pointer pushed it back to 73-68 and the Wildcats clinched it at the free throw line in the final minute.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Villanova G Tony Chennault, who transferred from Wake Forest and got a special exemption to play this season, came off the bench and chipped in four points in 13 minutes. … The Thundering Herd went 12-of-27 from 3-point range, led by Scarver’s 5-of-7 performance. Martin added three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. … The game was part of the 2K Sports Classic, which shifts to Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
