Cleveland State secured the first big upset of the college basketball season with a 71-58 victory over No. 7 Vanderbilt in Nashville on Sunday.

D’Aundray Brown led the way with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven steals and Trevon Harmon added 11 points for the Vikings (1-0), who returned four starters from an NIT team last season.

The Vikings jumped right on the Commodores (1-1) early, racing out to a 37-24 lead at the half, thanks to a strong defensive effort. Vanderbilt shot just 29 percent (7 of 24) before the break.

Vanderbilt, who opened with a victory against Oregon on Friday, turned the ball over 20 times against Cleveland State and was outworked on the boards. Center Festus Ezeli, who is out for the first six games due to a suspension, was missed for Vanderbilt.

Cleveland State let Vanderbilt draw as close as 53-47 with 7:01 left but Brown converted a pair of free throws and Jeremy Montgomery secured a steal and converted a layup to push it back to double digits.

Vanderbilt went nearly four minutes without a field goal as Cleveland State regained control.
