Star sophomore Cleveland Melvin led the way with 17 points as DePaul opened its season with a 91-72 victory over visiting Texas Pan-American on Friday.

Moses Morgan added 16 points for the Blue Devils (1-0), who are looking to improve upon last season’s 7-24 mark.

Melvin, who was named the Big East Freshman of the Year last season, is the key to those hopes. The Baltimore native had a tough shooting night (7-of-16), but added six rebounds and committed only one turnover.

DePaul jumped out to a big lead in the first half, taking advantage of some sloppy play from Texas-Pan American to go into the break with a 46-33 edge.

The Broncos would get it down to single digits early in the second, but could not keep pace with the Blue Devils the rest of the way.

DePaul ended up scoring 38 points off 21 Texas-Pan American turnovers.

Brandon Provost collected 16 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos (0-1).
