Virginia put together a 15-2 run late in the second half and held on to beat host Georgia Tech 62-56 on Wednesday in a matchup of two of the ACC’s bottom dwellers.

Mustapha Farrakhan scored 17 points for the Cavaliers (14-13, 5-8 ACC), who won their second straight game after they dropped five of their previous six.

Iman Shumpert’s 12 points led Georgia Tech (11-16, 3-10 ACC), which lost its seventh consecutive conference game despite outrebounding Virginia 35-24.

Georgia Tech led 44-40 on Lance Storrs’ layup with 9:31 to play, but the Cavaliers scored 15 of the next 17 points. Sammy Zeglinski’s 3-pointer with 6:19 left tied the game at 46-46. Farrakhan gave Virginia the lead on two free throws with 5:32 left, then made it 51-46 on a 3-pointer with 4:08 to go.

Assane Sene’s layup with 2:22 left ended the run and made it 55-46 Virginia. The Yellow Jackets drew within 59-56 on Mfon Udofia’s 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, but Farrakhan hit a free throw, and Udofia missed three free throws with 4.7 seconds to go.

Georgia Tech led 23-14 with less than seven minutes left in the first half before Virginia rallied to pull within 28-26 at halftime.

Virginia plays host to Boston College on Saturday; Georgia Tech plays at North Carolina State on Saturday.
