Jon Gray pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Tony Wolters and Ian Desmond hit run-scoring triples, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Wednesday night in Denver.

Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Desmond had two hits apiece for Colorado. The Rockies have won nine of their past 11.

Freddy Galvis homered for San Diego, which played without Wil Myers, who was scratched after taking a ball off his face during batting practice.

Myers was fielding grounders at third when one skipped off his glove and hit him. He lay on the ground for a few minutes before walking to the clubhouse under his own power.

Gray (10-7) continued his strong stretch since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on July 14. He struck out five over 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and a walk. He retired 12 straight in one stretch before leaving with a three-run lead.

It looked as if he might struggle after the Padres jumped on him in the first. Travis Jankowski led off with a single, and after a forceout and a popup, Cory Spangenberg doubled to score Jose Pirela from first to make it 1-0.

The Rockies tied it in the first on an RBI single by Carlos Gonzalez, and then took the lead in the second inning against starter Jacob Nix (1-2).

Desmond reached on a one-out walk, and Wolters followed with a triple down the right field line to make it 2-1. Wolters later scored on a wild pitch by Nix.

The Rockies extended the lead in the sixth off reliever Phil Maton. Nolan Arenado and Story hit singles, and Story stole second. One out later, Desmond tripled to drive in both. He was later tagged out at home trying to score on a grounder by Wolters.

Galvis hit a solo homer in the seventh, and Gray left after a single by Franmil Reyes.

The Rockies tacked on another run on Wolters' sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Nix allowed three runs on five hits in five innings in his third major league start for the Padres. He walked one and struck out two.
