Yu Darvish worked six scoreless innings and Manny Machado drove in a pair of runs with a two-out, fifth-inning single as the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Steven Wilson, Nick Martinez and Josh Hader each followed Darvish with a scoreless inning of relief as the Padres shut out Toronto on six hits. It was the Padres' ninth shutout of the season.

Darvish allowed four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts to improve to 7-6. Hader picked up his 23rd save, striking out Alejandro Kirk and George Springer for the final two outs.

The Padres have won two straight in Toronto after losing three in a row in Philadelphia. The Blue Jays are on a two-game skid following a four-game winning streak.

Darvish and Toronto's Jose Berrios were locked in a scoreless tie through four innings, but the Blue Jays' starter opened the door for San Diego with control issues in the fifth.

With one out, Trent Grisham drew a walk from Berrios, who then hit Ha-Seong Kim with a pitch. After Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out, Berrios turned and threw to shortstop Bo Bichette to pick off Grisham at second for the final out. Bichette then made a wide throw to third, allowing Grisham to get in safely with a stolen base, with Kim moving to second on the play.

Berrios intentionally walked Juan Soto to bring up Machado, who looped a soft line-drive single to center off the end of his bat, scoring Grisham and Kim.

Berrios (8-7) gave up two runs on four hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in six innings.

Toronto twice failed to score after getting the first two runners of the inning on base.

George Springer opened the bottom of the first with a single and Bichette drew a walk, but Darvish struck out Brandon Belt and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ahead of a bases-loading free pass to Matt Chapman. Whit Merrifield then lined out to second baseman Kim to end the inning.

Bichette and Belt had back-to-back singles to open the eighth against Martinez. But Guerrero and Chapman popped out before Martinez struck out Merrifield to end the inning.
