Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer, and Carlos Carrasco pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 2-1 victory over the host Baltimore Orioles on Monday night at Camden Yards.
Alonso's fifth blast of the season was all the offense Carrasco needed as the Indians won for the ninth time in their past 12 games.
The right-handed Carrasco (4-0) gave one run and six hits before giving way to left-hander Andrew Miller in the eighth. Carrasco struck out seven and walked two during the speedy two-hour, 21-minute contest.
Miller worked out of an eighth-inning jam, and right-hander Cody Allen struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.
Carrasco, 31, has allowed just two runs and 12 hits in 23 1/3 innings over his past three outings.
Chance Sisco drove in the lone run for Baltimore, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games.
Manny Machado, who was named American League Player of the Week earlier Monday, went 1-for-2 with two walks to stretch his hitting streak to 11 games.
Kevin Gausman (1-2) was the hard-luck loser after an effective, eight-inning outing. The right-hander gave up two runs and four hits, struck out seven and walked one.
Carrasco departed after giving up a one-out single to Tim Beckham in the eighth. Miller fanned Trey Mancini before Machado singled to left.
Miller started off with two strikes against Adam Jones and eventually retired the center fielder on a grounder to end the threat.
Allen struck out Chris Davis and Danny Valencia to start the ninth. Sisco worked the count to 2-2 before he was caught looking on a 94 mph fastball.
Edwin Encarnacion singled to center to start the second inning before Alonso smacked a 1-0 fastball over the fence in straightaway center.
Jones and Davis singled to start the bottom of the inning. One out later, Sisco swung at the first pitch and delivered a run-scoring ground single to right to trim Cleveland's lead to 2-1.
The Orioles threatened in the seventh when Valencia smacked a one-out double to center. However, Carrasco struck out Sisco and retired Anthony Santander on a fly to right to end the inning.
