Giants 8, Cardinals 0: Joaquin Arias was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Buster Posey added three hits, knocked in a run and scored twice as visiting San Francisco rolled over St. Louis to take three of four in the series.
Tim Hudson (6-2) backed the Giants’ offense with seven strong innings, allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Brandon Crawford knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice while Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco added two hits and an RBI apiece for San Francisco, which has won nine of its last 11.
Cardinals’ starter Lance Lynn (6-3), who registered his first career shutout in his last outing, yielded seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Matt Carpenter recorded a double and a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games for St. Louis.
Pagan, Hunter Pence and Posey opened the game with consecutive singles to push across one run before an error by second baseman Kolten Wong one out later made the final three runs of the frame unearned. Crawford’s RBI fielder’s choice and a two-out, two-run single by Arias pushed the lead to 4-0 after a half-inning.
Arias singled in another in a two-run third for the Giants and Crawford’s ground-rule double plated Posey in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage. Blanco tripled in a run in the sixth and Hudson retired the last 11 batters he faced to win for the first time in his last eight starts against the Cardinals.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Francisco 1B Pablo Sandoval was 1-for-4 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. … Cardinals LF Matt Holliday was 0-for-2 with a walk and has reached base safely in all 28 home games this season. … Giants LF/1B Michael Morse was a late scratch after fouling a pitch off his foot in batting practice, but Posey was back in the lineup after missing three games with tightness in his lower back.
