Cardinals 4, Cubs 3 (12): Justin Grimm hit rookie Greg Garcia with a pitch to force home the winning run in the 12th inning as host St. Louis evened its series with Chicago at a game apiece.
Jhonny Peralta went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored the winning run and Matt Adams added two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals. Seth Maness (1-2) stranded two runners in a scoreless 12th to earn the win.
Luis Valbuena had a two-run homer among his three hits and Welington Castillo and Emilio Bonifacio each had two hits for the Cubs, whose offense dropped off after racking up season highs for runs (17) and hits (20) in Monday's series opener. Grimm (1-2) took the loss, allowing a leadoff single to Peralta and two walks in the 12th before running a 1-2 pitch in on Garcia to push across the winning run.
The Cubs forced extra innings when Trevor Rosenthal gave up a one-out single to Junior Lake and walked Darwin Barney before Bonifacio dumped a single in front of right fielder Joey Butler to score Lake with the tying run. Valbuena ripped a first-pitch sinker into the right-field seats to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the third, but Adams singled home Matt Holliday to cap a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning and cut the deficit in half.
Peter Bourjos beat out a bunt single and Jon Jay worked a walk to spark the Cardinals' two-run rally in the sixth. Bourjos scored on Matt Carpenter's grounder and Starlin Castro's wild throw allowed Jay to advance to second, and Peralta ripped a single to left to score Jay with the go-ahead run.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings; he has allowed three home runs this season - all against the Cubs. … Chicago RHP Jake Arrieta struggled to find the strike zone, lasting only four innings and allowing one run, four hits and five walks. … Cardinals LF Matt Holliday has reached base in all 14 home games this season.
