Tigers 7, Indians 5: Victor Martinez had three hits, including a home run against his former team, and Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings as host Detroit extended its American League Central lead to 3 1/2 games over slumping Cleveland.

Martinez hit a solo shot to set off a three-run second inning, Torii Hunter added an RBI single and Miguel Cabrera drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame. Martinez finished a triple shy of the cycle and Hunter also had three hits for the Tigers, who have own three of four.

Verlander (8-4) got into some trouble in the fifth, when Michael Bourn's RBI single and Jason Kipnis' two-run double pulled the Indians within 5-3, but he came back to work two more scoreless frames and the Tigers tacked on a couple of insurance runs. Verlander allowed three runs on seven hits and won his fourth straight start.

Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez (4-4) was tagged for five runs - three earned - and seven hits in three-plus innings. He faced three batters in the fourth but couldn't record an out.

Cleveland's Jason Giambi and Drew Stubbs blasted solo home runs off Jose Valverde in the ninth, as the Indians got the tying run to the plate before Nick Swisher grounded out to end the rally. Mark Reynolds went 2-for-4 to record his first multi-hit game since May 23 for the Indians, who have lost five straight and 13 of their last 17.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Martinez has hit three home runs in six games this month after hitting two in 52 games in April and May. … Jimenez has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his past eight starts, but both exceptions have come against Detroit. … Tigers 1B Prince Fielder went 0-for-4, snapping his 11-game hitting streak.
