Braves 2, Padres 1:
Kris Medlen fired 7 1/3 scoreless innings and Freddie Freeman homered as host Atlanta reduced its magic number to clinch the National League East to four.

Freeman finished 3-for-3 and Chris Johnson added two hits and a RBI as the Braves moved 11 games ahead of Washington atop the East. Medlen (14-12) won his fourth consecutive start, holding the Padres to four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, and Craig Kimbrel served up Chase Headley's solo homer in the ninth before notching his major league-leading and career-best 47th save - and 37th in a row.

San Diego starter Robbie Erlin (2-3) gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings as the Padres fell to 2-3 on their 10-game road trip, losing for the third time in four contests.

Johnson, who came into the night second in the NL in batting, singled to left in the fourth to plate Justin Upton with the game’s first run. Freeman led off the sixth with his 21st homer, a solo shot to left on a 1-0 pitch to double the lead.

The Padres threatened in the second on back-to-back two-out singles by Tommy Medica and Ronny Cedeno, but Medlen retired Nick Hundley on a groundout to second to end the frame. Headley, who belted the tie-breaking homer in San Diego's comeback win Friday, took Kimbrel deep into the right-field seats leading off the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Headley's homer was the first run allowed by Kimbrel since July 4, a span of 28 consecutive scoreless appearances. ... Atlanta improved its major league-leading home record to 52-21, winning for the 21st time in its last 27 contests. … Freeman’s homer gave him 99 RBIs, 65 of which have come at home.
