Ian Kennedy continued his dominance against San Diego with nine strikeouts over six innings as visiting Arizona improved to 5-1.

Jason Kubel doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Chris Young hit a solo homer in the eighth before J.J. Putz threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

The Padres opened the game with a run on three straight hits against Kennedy (2-0), who struck out the next three batters and won his sixth consecutive start against San Diego.

Starting in place of injured Tim Stauffer, Anthony Bass allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in his fourth career start. Micah Owings (0-1) followed Bass and took the loss.

Aaron Hill snapped an 0-for-15 slump with an RBI single in the fifth inning, and Young hit his second home run of the series with a liner over the left field wall off Andrew Cashner in the eighth inning.

San Diego, which has scored 20 runs in its first seven games, managed just five hits against Kennedy and three Arizona relievers. The Padres struck out 13 times, including three for Jesus Guzman.

Stephen Drew (ankle) went 1-for-4 in an extended spring training game Thursday. He’s hoping to return to the Diamondbacks in early May. … Padres catcher Nick Hundley is hitless in 19 at-bats this season after going 0-for-4 Thursday. …Kennedy entered the game with a 1.82 ERA and 44 strikeouts in his last five starts against the Padres. ...Young has 14 career home runs against the Padres, including eight at Petco Park.
