Rays 5, Nationals 4: Carlos Pena homered and David Price became the American League’s fourth nine-game winner as visiting Tampa Bay defeated Washington.

Elliot Johnson added a two-run triple as the Rays won their second straight contest and handed the Nationals their fourth consecutive defeat.

Price (9-4) gave up four runs – three earned – and six hits in seven innings while winning for the third time in four starts. He struck out four and walked one.

Jake McGee worked a perfect eighth after Joel Peralta was ejected for having a foreign substance in his glove and Fernando Rodney closed for his 20th save in 21 opportunities.

Umpire crew chief Tim Tschida said a "significant amount" of pine tar was found on Peralta's glove.

Pena hit a two-run homer to center off Washington’s Chien-Ming Wang during a four-run third inning. The uprising was culminated by the two-run triple by Johnson that gave Tampa Bay a 5-2 advantage.

Washington’s Michael Morse hit a two-run homer to the sixth inning to make it a one-run game. The shot that barely cleared the right-center field fence was reviewed by the umpiring crew to confirm the original call of a homer.

Upton smacked the third of three straight Tampa Bay singles to start the game as the Rays jumped to a 1-0 lead. The Nationals tied the score in the bottom inning on Pena’s two-out fielding error.

Washington took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homer by Ian Desmond.

Wang (2-3) allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nationals manager Davey Johnson asked the umpiring crew to inspect Peralta’s glove as he was about to warm up and umpires confiscated it for further inspection after discovering the foreign substance. … Desmond has a career-best 11 homers, one more than his previous high in 2010. … The victory was the 50th of Price’s career. … Morse’s homer was his first in 15 games this season since returning from injury. He hit 31 in 2011.
