Orioles 2, Nationals 1: Jason Hammel matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts and J.J. Hardy delivered the tiebreaking double as host Baltimore edged Washington.

Hammel (8-2) allowed an unearned run and five hits and didn’t walk anyone in his second consecutive strong effort. The right-hander threw a complete-game one-hitter against the Atlanta Braves in his last outing.

Hardy lined a double into left-center field off Jordan Zimmermann (3-6) in the fifth to score Nick Johnson as Hammel improved to 5-0 in seven career starts against the Nationals.

Orioles reliever Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 22 opportunities. Johnson walked Ian Desmond with two outs and then snared a liner from Danny Espinosa to end it.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-out homer to left in the second to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead.

Washington tied the contest with an unearned run in the fifth. Desmond singled and then attempted to go from first to third on a groundout. Reynolds made a wild throw to third and Desmond continued around to score.

Zimmermann allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Orioles had eight hits after recording six or fewer in six consecutive contests … Desmond had two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games … Baltimore OF Nolan Reimold will undergo season-ending neck surgery Monday to repair a herniated disk … The Nationals are just 1-3 against the Orioles this season.
