Josh Beckett pitched a one-hitter and Kevin Youkilis cracked a three-run homer to lead the visiting Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.
Beckett, who struck out six and didn’t walk a batter, allowed a third-inning single to Reid Brignac en route to his fifth career shutout. He retired the last 19 batters and lowered his American League-leading ERA to 1.86.
Boston, which was shut out by James Shields 4-0 at Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, snapped a 16-inning scoreless string in the seventh. Dustin Pedroia tripled, and after Jeremy Hellickson intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez, Youkilis slammed his 10th homer into the left field bleachers.
Hellickson (7-5) allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings.
It was Boston’s first win against the Rays in four meetings this season. The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 11 games.
Tampa Bay's Johnny Damon went 0-for-4 to end his streak of reaching base at 39 consecutive games.
