After failing to claim last year's World Series, the Philadelphia Phillies had to settle for winning their three-game set against the New York Yankees.

Shane Victorino belted a two-run homer and Kyle Kendrick tossed seven strong innings as the Phillies scored four in the ninth to cruise to a 7-1 triumph over the Yankees on Thursday.

Raul Ibanez slapped an RBI double and Ryan Howard and Wilson Valdez added RBI singles for Philadelphia, which overcame a loss in the series opener to win the final two contests at Yankee Stadium.

Making his first career start against New York, Kendrick (4-2) allowed one run and four hits while striking out three to pick up the win.

Former Yankee Jose Contreras retired the side in order in the eighth and combined with J.C. Romero in the ninth to preserve the victory.

Robinson Cano ripped an RBI single and Andy Pettitte (8-2) allowed three runs and six hits for New York.

Pettitte moved into second place in the franchise's all-time strikeouts list by fanning Jayson Werth in the second inning. The 38-year-old left-hander collected his 1,779th strikeout to move past Ron Guidry on the list. Whitey Ford has the Yankees' record with 1,956.
