Francisco Liriano pitched eight brilliant innings and Minnesota used a seventh-inning rally to topple the Atlanta Braves 2-1 Friday night at Target Field.

Liriano (6-3) was dominant all night, giving up one run on five scattered hits while striking out a season-high eleven and walking none. At one point Liriano recorded seven straight strikeouts.

The only run against him came in the second inning when an Omar Infante groundout plated Troy Glaus.

Atlanta starter Tim Hudson also pitched well. Hudson was pitching a shutout until he ran into trouble in the seventh. Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer all had singles to start the inning, loading the bases with none out. Hudson got Jim Thome to strike out before Jason Kubel tied the game with a single to right field. Delmon Young came on to pinch-hit the as the next batter and hit an 0-2 pitch to right field, the Twins’ fifth of the inning, to score another run and give the Twins a 2-1 lead.

Hudson then struck out Nick Punto and got Denard Span to ground out, ending the threat.

He ended up allowing two runs while yielding seven hits and one walk in eight innings, but it wasn’t enough as he took the loss and dropped his record to 6-2.

Jon Rauch struck out the side in the ninth for his 16th save of the season.

Kubel was the only Twins player to have more than one hit, going 2-for-3, while Troy Glaus also went 2-for-3 for Atlanta.

Infante left the game in the sixth inning after fouling a ball off his foot.
