John Jaso reached on an infield single and scored the winning run on a safety squeeze by Jason Bartlett in the bottom of the 11th inning to carry the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Cleveland Indians.
With one out in the 11th, Jaso reached safely and moved to third on Gabe Kapler’s single to right off Jamey Wright (1-2). Bartlett then dropped a bunt down the first-base line that Wright fielded but was unable to make a clean throw in time to catcher Mike Redmond.
The run made a winner of Andy Sonnanstine (1-0), who pitched a perfect inning of relief.
Tampa Bay had rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the eighth when Hank Blalock’s line drive to center bounced out of the glove of a diving Trevor Crowe, allowing Carl Crawford to score the tying run.
That spoiled a solid start by Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona, who allowed four hits in the first inning before settling down to retire 19 of 20. He allowed two runs on the five hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left the game in the first inning when he fractured his left forearm diving for a ground ball as third baseman Jhonny Peralta slid into his arm while reaching for the ball.
