The baby steps have started for the Kansas City Royals, who won their first series under new manager Ned Yost as by taking the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday against the Chicago White Sox 5-3.

Yost moved from the Royals’ front office to replace Trey Hillman who was fired Thursday.

Right-hander Brian Bannister had one of his better starts of the season and was rewarded with the victory as he improved to 2-3. He allowed seven hits, three earned runs and a walk in six innings with two strikeouts.

Joakim Soria pitched a pressure less ninth inning for this ninth save.

Bannister was backed by Jose Guillen offensively as the designated hitter had two hits and three RBIs. The first was a single that continued a three-run fourth inning and then he added a two-run single in the fifth to push the Royals lead to 5-2.

Billy Butler and Mike Aviles also had two hits apiece for the Royals, who improved to 14-24 overall.

Chicago starter Gavin Floyd (1-4) took the loss after giving up all five earned run in his six innings. He allowed 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Alex Rios had three of the White Sox’s 10 hits including his seventh home run of the season and Alexei Ramirez had two hits and two RBIs.
